Japanese sweets: A no-dessert culture

A Japanese chef, Koizumi Kazuhiro, said that there are no desserts, in the Western sense, to be found in traditional Japanese food culture. The dessert section of the menu of a Japanese restaurant will have some green tea ice-cream and also other flavors ice-creams. However, the Japanese do not really eat desserts after meals. We know that desserts are typically high in sugar, calories, and risks of obesity. This is one of the main reason Japan has a lower obesity rate compare to the United States.
